Offham 1st XI Vs R A C S 1st XI

Offham 1st XI won by 3 wickets

Offham came into this game on the back of three straight losses, finding themselves second from bottom, but were determined to turn things around against a RACS side one place above them.

RACS won the toss and elected to bat on a good wicket and with Simon Hallbrook taking the new ball, found Robert Donnelly’s edge third ball of the game, only for it to be put down in the slips. Offham were not disheartened by this, and with the excellent Andy Cox bowling at the other end, restricted RACS to 22 in the first 10 overs. Simon then made the breakthrough, Andrew Beales (14) mis-timing an off drive that was well taken by Tony Rajaratnum running back. Andy Cox then struck the very next over, bouncing out RACS number 3, Harry Purbrick, who was determined to play everything off the front foot, only to sky a ball straight up to Ben Gittings. 27/2.

Graham Razey and Andrew Prescott replaced the opening bowlers, and both bowled economically without reward. RACS brought up their 100 in the 38th over with only two wickets down, and soon realised they needed to up the scoring rate if a challenging total was going to be set. Robert Donelly (51) and Simon Durling (44) both batted sensibly and put on 94 for the 3rd wicket. Andy Cox and Simon Hallbrook returned and soon wickets started to tumble as RACS were forced to play shots. Some great death bowling saw RACS reach 158 before being all out off the last ball of the innings. Andy Cox, following on from two 6 fa’s in his previous 2 games, claimed 7/40 off 13 overs, and Simon Hallbrook backed this effort up with 2/39 from 13 overs. Offham fielded and bowled very well, but realised over tea and sarnies the job was only half done if victory was going to be secured.

Offham’s reply didn’t get off to the best of starts, and soon themselves 0-2 after only 3 balls, this saw number four batsmen Ben Gittings scrambling around in the changing room for his thigh pad. Andy Cox got a popper just short of a length which was easily snaffled by Harry Purbrick at silly mid off and the very next ball Graham Razey tried to pull a short one, only for it to cannon into his gloves and be caught by a very grateful Harry Purbrick. Tom and Ben Gittings tried to rebuild, and took the score to 30 before Ben Gittings was bowled top of leg stump trying to work a ball. Laurie Bell and Tom Gittings then put on 43 and took the score to 73 after 22 overs, before Tom Gittings left a ball that was heading down leg side, only for it to swing and seam a very long way, hitting the top of off. 73/4. Jason Waitt hit two fours before falling, and at the 30 over mark Offham were 92/5, with Laurie Bell batting sensibly and Simon Dickie bowling his 15 overs straight through, claiming 2/36.

Offham didn’t need to take any risks from here on in, and lost a couple more wickets in reaching the total, but a little cameo from Tony Rajaratnum, including the famous slog sweep over backward square leg for 6 won Offham the game in 45.1 overs. A great patient innings by Laurie Bell (47*) held it all together and the team will go into next weeks game hoping that this game is the start of a winning streak.
