Offham 1st XI Vs Bapchild 1st XI

Bapchild 1st XI winning draw

THE STRUGGLE CONTINUES

Offham won the toss on this overcast afternoon and decided to have a bowl on a damp looking wicket. Bapchilds openers got off to a steady start against the new ball pair of Simon Hallbrook and Andy Cox, but neither could make any inroads, Bapchild reaching 45/0 by the time both openers were taken off in the 14th over. Anthony Rajaratnum and Graham Razey replaced, and Raj soon made the breakthrough. 59/1 after 17. This brought Bapchilds overseas player Ben Fulton to the crease, but steady bowling saw neither batsmen able to pick up the pace. Anthony Rajaratum struck again in the 29th and 31st over, by this time Bapchild had moved on to 90. Rajey bowled his 15 overs straight through, finishing with figures of 3/54, a great effort. The 40th over came and with Bapchild on 131, they knew quick runs were needed to post a challenging total. Ben Fulton exploited the short boundary well, and he finished with 103*, helping his team to 238/3 off the allotted 50 overs, Bapchild getting 107 off the final 10 overs.

Offham knew that this target was well within their reach , and with Anthony Rajaratum opening the innings for the first time, got off to a good start, hitting a four off his first ball and a six off his 5th ball. Unfortunately, he dragged on soon after, and rebuilding was required. Ben and Tom Gittings took the score to 43 in the 17th over, before Ben fell for 20, and Laurie Bell fell soon after for 16 trying to force the pace. Offhams innings was taking a similar pattern to Bapchilds, and were 73/3 after 28 overs. Offham knew it was now or never, and Jason Waitt and Tom tried to up the pace, but two quick wickets made this difficult. Tom found it difficult to time anything due to the nature of the wicket, and was finally out in the 38th over for 38. With the score on 104/6 after 38 overs, Offham knew the game was up, and set about picking up bonus points. With every fielder around the bat, this enabled Andy Prescott to hit a quick 25*, ensuring Offham at least picked up one bonus point for their batting. The final score of 140/8 was disappointing and in reflection, the last ten overs of their innings was significant, and unfortunately was not repeated by the Offham batters. Some credit should be paid to the Bapchild skipper, who employed bowlers who took the pace off the ball, and this meant runs were hard to come by.
